Shop Friends: Nigel Sussman

"I create art that communicates complex ideas and feelings in an approachable way. I find public art to be especially rewarding because it brings joy to everyday life."

Nigel Sussman is a Berkeley-based muralist and illustrator known for his isometric depictions of everyday objects, imaginary machinery, and complex architecture. His seek-and-find style pieces can be found throughout the Bay Area at a variety of businesses, organizations, and public spaces, and his mural kit includes a couple of well-loved ILE bags. We recently caught up with Nigel as he was touching up a long-running mural on Telegraph Ave to learn more about his creative process. Check out our interview below, along with info on the new shop card he designed for us:

Nigel, tell us a bit about yourself, your journey, and your creative practice.

I grew up in rural Maryland and moved to Oakland in 2003 when I transferred to the California College of Arts and Crafts to study illustration. From there I moved to San Francisco, joined a rock band, and worked in advertising for a while, before becoming a freelance illustrator and muralist in 2014.

Currently, a wide range of businesses and organizations from around the world commission me to create my signature seek-and-find illustrations that feature complex architecture and imaginary machines. It’s no surprise that my creative influences include Martin Handford (creator of Where’s Waldo?), MC Escher, and the original SimCity computer games. At home in Berkeley, California, I live with my wife, son, and cat.

What does your creative process look like? What are some themes you explore through your art?

I create art that communicates complex ideas and feelings in an approachable way. I find public art to be especially rewarding because it brings joy to everyday life. Using simple tools like paintbrushes and exterior house-paint, I transform barren spaces like garages and construction barriers into vibrant works of art.

My bold, graphic, and line-work style with a limited palette is universal, fun, and respectful. I love creating pieces that tell stories and help people feel increased joy in their surroundings.

What ILE pieces are you carrying? How do they complement your daily life?

The Black Cordura Default is my main backpack that goes with me when I am working on-site painting murals, and pretty much every time I travel. I got it about 6 years ago and it’s still in perfect shape, despite some accidental paint splatters :)
